Ethereum Deploys Pectra Upgrade on Sepolia Testnet: A Key Step Before Mainnet Launch
Today, at approximately 2:30 PM, Ethereum officially deployed the Pectra upgrade on the Sepolia testnet, marking the final crucial testing phase before its anticipated mainnet release next month.
Pectra Activated on Sepolia After Resolving Holesky Issues
The Sepolia deployment follows Ethereum’s initial Pectra test on the Holesky testnet on February 24. However, during the Holesky deployment, an issue related to an incorrect deposit contract address caused a chain split, delaying transaction finalization.
The Ethereum development team quickly resolved the problem, ensuring that Pectra could proceed as planned on Sepolia.
Testing on Sepolia is a critical step as it serves as the final major testnet to validate Pectra’s new features in a simulated environment before rolling it out on the main network. If no major issues arise, Pectra could be deployed on the Ethereum mainnet by early April.
Pectra: A Major Upgrade Combining Prague and Electra
Pectra is a significant Ethereum upgrade that merges two key components:
- Prague (Execution Layer improvements)
- Electra (Consensus Layer improvements)
The goal of Pectra is to enhance scalability, security, and user experience, solidifying Ethereum’s position as the leading blockchain platform.
Key Improvements in Pectra
Pectra introduces several notable upgrades, including:
1. EIP-7702: Enhanced User Experience for Crypto Wallets
EIP-7702 improves account abstraction, allowing users greater flexibility in managing their crypto wallets. This paves the way for smart wallets with enhanced security features and better usability.
2. EIP-7251: Increased Staking Limit to 2,048 ETH
Previously, each validator on Ethereum could only stake 32 ETH, but EIP-7251 raises this limit to 2,048 ETH. This boosts network efficiency by reducing the number of required validators while maintaining decentralization.
3. EIP-7691: Rollup Scalability Enhancements
Ethereum currently leverages rollup technology to improve scalability and reduce transaction fees. EIP-7691 increases the maximum number of blobs, optimizing performance and enhancing Layer 2 solutions.
Ethereum to Finalize Mainnet Deployment Timeline
Ethereum developers are expected to finalize the official activation date for Pectra on the mainnet during the All Core Developers (ACD) meeting this Thursday. If everything proceeds smoothly, the upgrade will go live on Ethereum mainnet in early April.
With Pectra, Ethereum is not only strengthening its competitive edge but also expanding its scalability to serve millions of users in the future. This marks a crucial milestone in Ethereum’s evolution, promising a more robust, flexible, and optimized blockchain ecosystem for all users.
